They’re not very exciting, but they serve their purpose. And they define themselves by their accuracy.
For 4 years, I have worked part time for a major K-12 standardized test prep and curriculum material provider as a technical illustrator mostly working on math and science. When I receive social studies specs, I get excited. Here are some maps and other social studies pieces that I’ve worked on.
Much like the Snapshot Picture Library series, this series of children’s books was produced to a tight budget. I selected 60 images per title that I worked on and editors culled from there.
Working with Weldon-Owen and Fog City Press, I selected images that suited each title that I worked on. We were under very strict budget constraints, as Fog City Press publishes bargain books for sale through Barnes & Noble and other booksellers.
This series produced both coffee table style hardcover books and corresponding baby’s board books using the same images but different text geared to the small child.
I came onto this project after the first few books were designed and produced and they needed someone who was a designer, but who also knew print and how printing really happens. Oceans was the first book that I worked on. The cover design was complete, but I jumped on for the production work. This series is a printing extravaganza, featuring 3 levels of sculptural emboss, 2 different varnishes, and a foil underlay! After Oceans, I put together the cover designs for Human Body, Predators, Insects & Spiders, Volcanoes & Earthquakes, Sharks, and Knights & Castles under Weldon-Owen Art Director Kelly Booth and Creative Director Gaye Allen. The series is geared towards the tween market and is printed on paper over board. Paperback versions intended for school use only were also produced (by me) and printed, but without varnish and foil underlays. Beer, Blood, and Cornmeal is a memoir written by Bob Calhoun. We had already seen the cover design from ECW Press and I set to design Bob’s site to fit with the general aesthetic of the book and give it an overall readability, since the site is very content-heavy. Bob also has a blog on his site, powered by b2explosion and integrated into the site’s overall look and feel.
